Pack Smart: Hospital Bag Tips For First-time Mums

Expectant moms are often excited about the impending arrival of their newborn. However, they may also feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tasks they need to accomplish. First-time moms in particular often worry that they are forgetting something. For instance, they might fear that upon arrival at the hospital, they won’t have everything they need.

One question is, “what should be in your hospital bag?” While every mom is unique and may have different needs, certain items are beneficial for every new mother. The following checklist ensures these items are not overlooked when packing.

Important Documents

New moms should ensure they have essential documents in their hospital bag. Many hospitals allow patients to pre-register. If a mom has not done so, having the registration forms completed and ready to turn over is helpful. A photo ID and insurance card should also be in the bag in case the hospital does not have this information, and moms who have a birth plan need to include this in the bag.

Clothing

New moms should not expect to return to their former size immediately after giving birth.  Pack maternity clothing to wear after the birth of the child to ensure these items aren’t constricting. Loose, comfortable items are always helpful, and moms who plan to nurse should have nightgowns, pajamas, and tops that open in the front to make breastfeeding effortless. Furthermore, have clothing that can easily be opened for skin-to-skin contact with the baby. A robe may be precisely what the mom wants for this.

Pack maternity leggings and a loose top for the trip home, nursing bras, and high-waisted dark underwear. Immediately after giving birth, women bleed a lot, so this underwear is helpful. Socks with grippers are also proper when moving around the hospital.

Toiletries

Hospitals typically have toiletries on hand for new moms. However, many women find they prefer their own items. Pack a toothbrush and toothpaste, a hairbrush, hair ties, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Don’t forget deodorant. Lip balm is helpful because hospital air tends to be dry, and women will need plenty of maxi pads. Hospitals provide these items, but some women prefer their own. It never hurts to pack a few makeup essentials for a quick pick-me-up after birth.

Additional Items

Pack your smartphone and charger. Ensure the charging cord is extra long because you can’t know where the plugs will be in the hospital. A phone charging bank is helpful, and most women like to have a water bottle with a straw. Women planning to store their cord blood should have a kit to do so, and a nursing pillow can be helpful. Nipple shields and nipple balm are also beneficial for women who are nursing.

Baby Items

The most important thing to pack for the baby is the car seat, as hospitals will not allow moms to take their babies home without one. Have onesies and zipper sleepers for the newborn, socks, and a baby hat. Most hospitals provide every newborn with a receiving blanket, but it never hurts to pack one or two. Burp cloths and the going-home outfit should also be included in the hospital bag.

Items for the Partner

When packing the hospital bag, don’t forget to include your partner. Pack comfortable clothing for their stay, along with toiletries, snacks, and drinks. Consider providing a pillow and blanket to ensure comfort, as they may be sleeping on a cot or a fold-out chair. Pack money so they can visit the hospital cafeteria and use the vending machines.

Have this bag ready to go when you’re approximately 36 weeks pregnant. There’s no need to overpack, as hospitals typically have the essentials new moms need if something is forgotten. Have the car seat installed before heading to the hospital, and consider stopping by a fire department to ensure it’s properly secured in the vehicle. Women who take these steps find they are less concerned about forgetting something, and they can focus on their newborn when they arrive. This bonding time is the most crucial element of the entire process.
