Practical footwear

Shoes are the pieces that will take most of your space if you overpack them. Yes, we all want options, but the truth is you don’t need five pairs. A good rule of thumb is to bring three types of shoes: a comfortable pair for walking, something stylish for evenings out, and one for the beach or pool like flip flops or sliders. Trainers or sporty sandals are great for long days of sightseeing, especially if your itinerary involves cobbled streets or uneven paths. Avoid bringing new shoes unless you’ve properly broken them in, holiday blisters are no fun. Steer clear of heels that only go with one outfit or shoes that you might wear “just in case.” If they’re not versatile, they’ll likely stay in your suitcase. And remember, the more you pack, the heavier your luggage becomes, which is the last thing you want when dragging a suitcase through the airport or hopping on and off trains.

Bags that make sense

Choosing the right bags for your holiday can make a huge difference. You’ll want something practical for daytime exploring and something a bit more compact for evenings out. A lightweight crossbody bag is perfect for sightseeing during the day. It keeps your hands free, helps keep you safe from pickpockets, and is big enough for your phone, sunglasses, a small wallet, and some sun cream. Look for one with zippers and inner pockets for added security and make sure it matches all your day time looks. For beach days, a foldable tote or canvas bag works well and won’t crowd your luggage. For the evenings, a small clutch or wristlet is ideal and can also double as a wallet inside your daytime bag. If you want a bag that can do it all, we suggest going for a leather satchel like the ones  on Gaelsong .The colorful tweed pattern will give you that chic summer feel and the multiple ways of wearing it will allow you to take it from day to night easily. If you pack this and a tote bag, you’re ready for a super worry free holiday. And this way, you’re not overcrowding your luggage with stuff you don’t need.

Sunglasses and sun hats

When it comes to sunny destinations, sunglasses and hats are real must-haves. Not only are they stylish, but they also protect you from the sun, which is reason enough to pack them. A classic pair of sunglasses in a neutral shade will go with everything and keep you very stylish. Leave the overly trendy or colourful ones behind unless you’re happy to wear them just once or twice. Bonus points if your sunglasses come with a hard case so they don’t get squashed in your bag. Wide-brimmed hats are great for beach holidays and offer excellent sun protection. A fabric hat that folds neatly into your bag is ideal, so consider bucket hats as well. A small don’t would be straw hats as they are pretty, but can be a nightmare to pack without losing their shape. If you do bring one, wear it on the plane or carry it to avoid damage. Baseball caps are another great option if you want something more casual or sporty. Try choosing one or two hats that match all your outfits, no matter which hats these are.

Less is more for jewellery

Jewellery is one of those things we usually tend to overpack, often because it’s small and easy to throw into a pouch. But do you really need three necklaces, six pairs of earrings and that bracelet you haven’t worn in months? Probably not, but we keep telling ourselves that we’ll wear it on holiday. Our suggestion is to keep it simple and stick to a few well-loved pieces that go with multiple outfits. A pair of gold or silver hoops, a delicate necklace and maybe a ring or two can be all you need. You can add a few colorful pieces to feel the summer vibes, but make sure they match your outfits. Avoid taking anything too expensive or sentimental, especially if you’ll be swimming, hiking or staying in hostels. Plastic jewellery is a great alternative and won’t leave you heartbroken if it gets lost or damaged. And if you do pack several pieces, keep them in a small organiser or pill box to stop chains from tangling or earrings from disappearing into your bag.
