What Happens If You Are in a Group Message with Someone You Blocked on Your iPhone

Have you ever felt like you needed a break from one of your contacts and wondered what would happen if you were in a group message with someone you blocked on your iPhone?

Whatever the reason for no longer wanting a connection with someone, blocking a contact from your phone may be your safest option.

Maybe you don’t want to be involved in a particular conversation for a while, perhaps you have become estranged from someone, or maybe you need to break away from a toxic relationship.

Here, we’ll discuss what happens if you are part of an iMessage group with someone you’ve blocked on your iPhone.

What Happens When You Block Someone in a Group Message on Your iPhone?

Whether it is an easy or a difficult decision for you, blocking one of your contacts means they will no longer be able to call or message you directly.

However, when that contact is part of a group message on your iPhone, blocking them can become a little more complex. Let’s take a look at a few things you should keep in mind when blocking someone on your iPhone.

1. You Will Not See Each Other’s Messages

When you block a contact from your iPhone, whether you both belong to an iMessage group, they were added to the group after you’ve blocked them, or if another contact added you to a group after you blocked the contact, neither of you will see each other’s messages to the group.

2. You Will Not See Changes Made by the Blocked Contact

If your blocked contact changes the iMessage group name, their contact picture, or any of their settings, you will no longer be able to view them and vice versa.

3. No Notifications

Your contact will not receive a notification or alert that you’ve blocked them from your iPhone.

Therefore, they will not be aware you are no longer receiving their messages and they will not know when you’ve messaged the group.

They will, however, receive an “error” or “undeliverable” message when they attempt to message you directly.

Alternatively, you will no longer receive notifications when your blocked contact messages the group since their messages will be automatically hidden from you.

Furthermore, other members of the group will not receive a notification you have blocked a member of the iMessage group.

4. The Blocked Contact Can Still Be Part of the Group Message

Although you will not see messages from a blocked contact on your iPhone, they will not be removed from the group and will continue to participate in the chat, which can lead to confusion and misunderstandings.

5. Potentially Confusing Conversations

You and your blocked contact will not see each other’s messages; however, other members will, which can lead to quite confusing exchanges.

If your blocked contact messages the group and others respond, you may feel out of the loop as you’ll only see their responses not knowing what prompted the conversation, and the same will happen to your blocked contact.

Likewise, since the other members of the group may not be aware you’ve blocked one of the iMessage participants – unless you inform them, they will continue to include the blocked member in conversations leading them to quickly spiral out of control.

6. You Can ‘Filter’ Messages from Unknown Members

If your iMessage group has members who are not part of your contact list on your iPhone, you can ‘filter’ their messages in the Settings on your iPhone.

As their messages arrive, they will be delivered to an “Unknown Senders” inbox and you will not receive notifications.

Keep in mind that blocking any member of an iMessage group can lead to misunderstandings since you will not be privy to the entire conversation.
