Last night we visited Wild Lights, the night-time festival of lights display featuring giant colourful lanterns and illuminated animal sculptures inspired by wildlife at Dublin Zoo. There’s no denying it’s a must-see production featuring an unbelievable 12,000 meters of silk, 19,000 bulbs, 5000 meters of LED lights, 48,000 glass bottles and 215,000 pieces of porcelain weighing over 9.5 tonnes.
And it didn’t disappoint.
Situated the whole way around the main lake up past the Orangutans new enclosure and right up past the penguins home at Dublin Zoo you’ll find Wild Lights. Thousand upon thousands of lights dangling above your head, hidden in the bushes and sculptures (some moving) proudly standing to light up the whole Zoo, glowing. We didn’t know where to look with the most calming and ambient Chinese music that would almost put you to sleep. It makes me believe children with sensory needs would thrive at the Zoo during spectacular light display.
At Wild Lights, you’ll find Chinese craft stalls, foods and drinks. Chinese performers every half hour. They have wristbands upon entry for kids in case they get lost you know with the Zoo been in darkness except for the sculptures, lanterns and dangly lights. Also, animals will not be visible during the Wild Lights experience.
The highlights of the evening at Wild Lights is the Red Lanterns, a 16-metre high porcelain elephant tower and a 30-meter long smoke firing Chinese dragon.
Adults tickets are €20, children are priced at €15 and under 3’s go free and I think it’s worth every penny. It opens to the public tomorrow until January 7th every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5-9pm. Snacks and food are expensive as always at Zoo’s so I recommend bringing lots of snacks for the kids to nibble on as they make there way around. Between hot chocolates, doughnuts, ice cream and the craft stalls the girls had us broke.
I wholeheartedly believe it would be the perfect Christmas family day out this year and I would most definitely do it again. It’s a magnificent display and Dublin hasn’t seen anything like it before.
