Things NOT To Say To A Pregnant Woman

I’m fourteen weeks pregnant, enjoying the second trimester. I’m at the ‘eat what you want, as much as you want, do whatever you want’ stage. And so far there have been no hormonal outbursts, midnight snacking or endless toilet trips. Second trimester is treating me kind.

Some of the questions I have been asked by family, friends and strangers, my midwife or consultant didn’t even ask me. Here is a list of questions I have been asked in the past few months and things you should not actually ask a pregnant woman.

Was it planned?

Since when is it okay to interrogate someone about conception? FYI if not being on contraception means ‘planned’ then yes my little babog was planned.

Was there nothing on the telly?

Well considering half of Ireland is expecting in August, NO there was nothing on my TV in November…

Are you sure you’re not having twins?

Why don’t you just tell me I look fat! I’m pretty sure there is only one little person in there. I am NOT having twins!

I think you’re having a boy/girl…

Let’s get one thing straight you cannot guess by a person’s figure, skin, eating habits, piss or poo what gender their baby is going to be. FACT!

Are you planning anymore?

Would you ever let me push this baby out first! But if I’m honest I’m pretty sure the other half has booked in for a vasectomy.

I thought you were finished?

If I was finished having babies would I pregnant right now? No.

Can I touch your belly?

How about can I touch yours? No… Okay, you can’t touch mine either.

You may think these are all reasonable things NOT to say to a pregnant woman but I have heard them all, in this pregnancy and in less than fourteen weeks. So just to be clear, tell me I look amazing, tell me I’m glowing and tell me I’m looking radiant. DON’T TOUCH MY BELLY and we’ll all be friends.

What My Baby Actually Plays With

My kids have a room full of toys. Kayla’s have built up over the past few years and in fairness she could sit in there for hours and play happily with her colourful imagination.

Frankie on the other hand has been spoilt in less than eleven months old with hundreds of euro’s worth of toys. While I buy a lot of second hand toys at a quarter of the price, he was spoilt at Christmas. Almost half of the gifts he received are under his cot, unopened because he has way too many. And if I’m completely honest he has no interest in any of them.

My baby likes to play with…

She’s Gone VIRAL!!

I recently shared my pregnancy announcement here on my blog, including a YouTube video of Kayla’s reaction. It has since gone viral. The video has been shared by thousands, with over 40K views since Tuesday evening. My four-year-olds response to the news has everyone a little teary eyed.

I collected her from school on Thursday and she was so excited to tell me the long list of names who had seen her video. She told me she was famous, that she was a little celebrity. Her words, not mine.

So of course I treated her like one for the day, we headed off into town yesterday, a mammy daughter date, no boys aloud. We went to Ann’s Bakery and into Lush one of her favourite shops. With a belly full of berries and hot chocolate she sniffed and danced around the store in excitement picking her favourite bath bombs. She picked the Unicorn horn and Granny Takes A Dip, great choices me thinks.

viral video

Her video has featured on the IrishMirror.ie, HerFamily.ie, Her.ie, Evoke, MummyPages, The Independent, Elite Daily, Family Friendly HQ and The Daily Edge. Her little face is taking over everyones newsfeeds.

First Trimester – Pregnancy Sickness – Is there a CURE?

What is Pregnancy Sickness?

Pregnancy sickness is the painstaking suffering of nausea and vomiting all day long and not only in the morning. Since for some women the nausea and vomiting is the worst in the morning, the common term is ‘morning sickness’. Pregnancy sickness can differ from feeling nauseous to feeling so nauseous that you have to vomit. Pregnancy sickness seems to be caused by a mixture of all the hormonal changes that occur in the female body due to the pregnancy and the sensitivity to certain smells.

I’ve previously sailed through two pregnancies by-passing the dreaded sickness smugly, never even the slightest touch of queasiness. My little babog swimming around inside has changed all that. I’m wrenching at almost all foods, the odour, the texture, the taste. Snots, nappies, slurping, chewing and munching, it all REVOLTS me. Why can’t people just chew with their mouths closed. Like ewh! I have nausea and vomiting all day long, not only in the morning. I feel shit all day, everyday!

I’ve been spending my days hovering around the bathroom, hibernating indoors trying to hide any existence of my pregnancy. I’m struggling to conceal myself from my four year old shadow who currently thinks I’m dying. She has watched on in horror as I gag and puke.

I researched and researched and RESEARCHED for the cure. There is no magic cure. There is no magic pill. There is nothing I can do but ride it out.

I have eaten and snacked before getting out of bed to keep my energy levels up. I have tried to eat ginger biscuits, they repulse me. I’m sipping hot water with a slice of lemon in the mornings and I’m drinking water by the gallon to keep hydrated. I have eaten smaller meals and snacked more frequently not allowing myself to get hungry. I’ve nibbled peppermint sweets when I feel the faintest queasiness come on. I don’t eat and drink at the same time. I’m also eating bland foods such as crackers and dry toast and I’m taking plenty of supplements.

Did any of it work? Eating smaller frequent bland meals kind of helped. I also picked up a vitamin spray which helped avoid gagging over large vitamins. It’s such a horrible experience. Stupid hormones.

How women go through a whole pregnancy feeling like this is inhumane. I like food. No I love food and I was slowly drifting into a depression watching my little family devour all the beautiful foods I would chef up at dinner time whilst stubbornly nibbling on a cracker or dry toast.

The fog is finally lifting, I’m starting to feel myself again at almost twelve weeks. I just hope I don’t get any weird cravings like the last time.

New Years Resolution

Each year I form a list of unrealistic goals and resolutions in the lead up to the New Year, and usually by day three my pledges are non existent. This year I rounded up the family and we created the Alphabet of Adventures.

The Alphabet of Adventure shows twenty-four places we would all like to visit next year. Starting with a trip to the National Aquatic Centre, we will head off and complete our journey around Ireland finishing off with a trip to Dublin Zoo.

We as a family pledge to try eat healthier and get active. Kayla and I have agreed to walk to school with exception to the weather. We have also decided to cut down on our sweet treats, we will drink more water and read more books.

Kayla and I have also decided we are going to teach Daddy to cook. Scrambled egg, beans,  toast and cheerios just wont cut it any more. Tips, cookbooks, frilly aprons welcome!

I will blog our way through our a-z of adventures and keep you all updated on how we get on.

Happy New Year Guys!!!

Lush FUN Blue Bedtime Bath bar – Review

During a recent visit to Lush Henry Street, I came across a fantastic multi-purpose soft bath product for children and adults. The Lush Fun range is a bubble bar, body wash, solid shampoo and even for play. My four-year old hates getting her hair washed, it can be somewhat of an exaggerated and traumatic ordeal, now with this Play-Doh like substance bath-time has changed forever. (more…)

Review

When Helena from Babatots invited me along, although very interested I could only picture myself twisting Frankie into funny positions, breathless and attempting impossible poses.

IMG_20141202_122828

Helena took a very relaxed approach, with calming and soothing music. Each hour long class commenced with some simple breathing exercises. We would unwinding in meditation learning how to control our breathing.

Class followed with some simple stretches bending babies’ knee into their chest, crossing their arms over, stretching, stimulating and helping to improving their muscle development. We played, we sang and we had special one-on-one bonding time with baby. My yogi-bear loved the stretches, he still does, he chuckles every time.

Then we moved onto some of the funny positions I mentioned earlier. I did feel a little silly when we started the poses at my first class. One of the women on my course clearly did gymnastics, she twisted and posed to perfection. I was a breathless octopus (hands and legs everywhere) struggling to keep my posture and hold me ten-tonne baby correctly. Helena was brilliant at direction. She wanted us to feel comfortable and she helped anyone struggling with a pose.

There’s no alphabet to yoga but by class three if there was, I would have been able to spell yoga with my poses. I had great confidence once I became comfortable with holding my koala bear all thanks to Helena.

Each class ended with a relaxation exercise. Helena would have us falling asleep at her feet, unwinding in a trance. After each class Frankie would have a peaceful deep sleep and he would always be in fantastic humour upon wakening.

yoga

I’ve now been practicing yoga three months effectively and I feel great. My bodily posture has improved immensely. When we are having a bad day or if I get anxious I practice my breathing exercises and it really helps me regain control. I loved playing and having that special one-on-one bonding time with Frankie, all while exercising.

I really enjoyed the course of mum and baby yoga with Babatots and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to shift some pregnancy weight, meet some new friends or anyone looking for some precious and productive one-on-one time with baby.

Babatots have a host of classes around Dublin in everything from bump to baby at various times, you can check them out HERE. They also have a regularly updated Facebook page with informative shared content that you can also check that out HERE.

**Disclaimer: I received a free course of mum and baby yoga for reviewing purposes only. This does not affect my honest opinion.
